Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Is Pilates like Yoga?

A. In some respects, pilates conditioning is like yoga. Both are considered mind-body exercise methods of movement and both emphasize deep breathing and smooth, long movements that encourage your muscles to relax and lengthen. Pilates flows through a series of movements that are rather dynamic, systematic and anatomically based. In Pilates, the goal of the exercises is to give you optimal functional fitness.

Q. Who is Pilates for?

A. Pilates is for everyone of all ages, physical abilities and fitness levels. Pilates classes are recommended for people in good health, with no health concerns: this includes less active people as well as athletes and body-builders!
People who have health concerns often find Pilates very helpful, but are recommended to contact a qualified Pilates instructor in advance, as they will require individualised attention/private Pilates sessions. In these cases, GP approval is also required.

Q. Will Pilates make me bulk up?

A. No. Pilates may help you find definition, but definitely not bulk.

Q. Is seven times a week too much?

A. According to Mr Pilates himself, we should find the time for some Pilates exercises every single day. However, this does not mean that you should do one hour of Pilates each day. It is best to include some cardiovascular and resistance training each week for best overall results.

Q. How much extra weight can I add to the Pilates equipment?

A. Traditional Pilates uses springs for resistance, not weights. Different combinations of springs will provide varying levels of resistance - your instructor will help you make the right selection. Pilates is also used with small equipment such as rolls, Swiss Balls and elastic bands.

Q. Can I not just do Pilates at home with a video?

A. While a video/DVD can be useful when working out at home, it has the following disadvantages:
• a video will not be able to answer any questions you may have
• a video cannot give you feedback on your technique
• exercising to a video by yourself may prove less motivational than joining a regular class

Q. What should I wear to a Pilates class?

A. Comfortable, stretchy, fitted clothing works best. No trainers, but socks are acceptable.
