Pilates and Yoga
Strictly speaking, Pilates is not a form of yoga, although the fact that they are sometimes confused is understandable, particularly now that some instructors have started teaching both techniques in the same class.
Similarities
- Both can be described as mind-body techniques that heighten body awareness;
- Both can be taught for relaxation, strength or flexibility;
- Both place great importance on the breath;
- Joseph Pilates was clearly inspired by yoga in developing his own exercises.
Differences
- The focus of the exercise is usually different from the corresponding yoga move;
- The Pilates (lateral thoracic) breathing might be seen by some as the “opposite” of Yoga's (diaphragmatic) breathing;
- Pilates's intention was clearly to develop a new overall system to keep us in good health in these modern times: he never set out to work in the yoga tradition.
