What is Pilates?

Pilates is an exercise regime that places an emphasis on breath, core conditioning and body awareness.

Pilates exercise is a safe and highly effective way to stretch, strengthen and streamline your body, without building bulk or placing undue stress on your joints.

Here are some of the characteristics of Pilates:

  • Pilates is suitable for all leves of fitness and for all ages
  • You can continue doing Pilates for the rest of your life!
  • Pilates is the the perfect complement to cardiovascular exercise, sport, rehab and life.
  • At the end of a Pilates workout, you will feel toned, revitalised and moving with ease.

Pilates is a whole body workout, a series of physical exercises targeting the whole body, focusing on improving its flexibility and strength without building bulk. The method favours fewer repetitions with precise movements requiring proper control and form.

Pilates is also a mind-body technique: a “thinking way of moving”, a conceptual approach to movement that will challenge old assumptions. The mental focus required to properly perform the movements encourages a heightened awareness of muscle function and control.

"Pilates" is named after its creator, Joseph Pilates.

Pilates exercises are often compared to yoga but Pilates is not part of the yoga tradition.
